The Bionic Leg is not a prosthesis. Instead, the Bionic Leg is a rehabilitation device used under the direction of a physical therapist. It demands the patient put at least a little force on their affected leg, and computer-driven motors within the Bionic Leg provide the additional force needed to enable the patient to participate in rehab exercises. During a period of weeks, constant repetition and slow reduction of Bionic-Leg support helps patients reprogram their brain to use alternate brain regions to control their gait. Even patients who are 10 years post stroke have regained substantial function, at lease leaving their wheelchairs and walking with a cane. More than a dozen rehabilitation hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and outpatient clinics are now using Tibion Bionic Leg.Daily Living Comforts, Inc.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14857912503291934153noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3912337509550888010.post-12987955327251487902011-02-24T10:49:00.000-05:002011-02-24T10:49:10.494-05:00Alternative MedicineThe National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) classifies complementary and alternative medicine therapies into five categories:

Alternative medical systems. These systems are built on complete systems of theory and practice and include holistic medicine and naturopathic medicine; developed in the Western culture and Chinese medicine and Ayurveda medicine; developed in ancient Eastern cultures.

Mind-body intervention. This uses a variety of techniques to enhance the mind’s capacity to affect the body’s functions and systems. Techniques include cognitive behavioral therapy, meditation, prayer, mental healing, art, music, and dance therapy.

Biologically-based therapies. These therapies use substances found in nature, such as herbs, foods, and vitamins, and include dietary supplements, herbal products, and natural substances.

Manipulative and body-based methods. These methods heal using the movement of one or more body parts and may include chiropractic, osteopathic manipulation, and massage.

Energy therapies. There are two types of therapies that use energy fields. Bio-field therapy manipulates our bio-fields by applying pressure and/or manipulating the body by placing hands in, or through, these fields. Qigong, reiki, and therapeutic and healing touch are included in this type of therapy. Bio-electromagnetic-based therapies involve the unconventional use of electromagnetic fields, such as pulsed fields, magnetic fields, or direct current fields.Daily Living Comforts, Inc.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14857912503291934153noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3912337509550888010.post-19293428955200249202010-12-01T16:07:00.003-05:002010-12-01T17:16:32.819-05:00Medical MarijuaniaOver the past few years there has been an astounding amount of medical evidence that marijuana may play a significant role in slowing the progression of alzheimer's disease. Grotto says you can achieve the same effect with a daily ounce of high-flavanoid dark chocolate.
BACK TEA WITH CITRUS PEAL. Long-time tea drinkers enjoy half the risk of skin cancer - especially if they sip two or more cups each day, according to a 2007 Dartmouth Medical School study. That's possible due to tea's polyphenols, which may help protect against UV radiation. Centuries later, Boericke's Homeopathic Materia Medica recommended parsley for urinary tract ailments, as did The Electric Materia Medica, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, a manual of the Eclectics, a group of US physicians who practiced from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s and were famous for their use of North American botanicals.
Of course, after you've eaten all those onions, you'll also need this breath freshener of yore. "The strong smell of onions is quite taken away by the eating of parsley leaves," counseled Parkinson.
RESEARCH PROVES: According to Yarnell's 2002 World Journal of Urology review of several animal studies, parsley roots do increase urine output. The German Commission E, a regulatory body, has approved the plant for cystitis and other urinary tract disorders.
GET THE BENEFIT: If you have a urinary tract infection or a similar discomfort, try drinking three daily cups of tea, each made with 2 g of common parsley (you don't need just the roots), or taking 2 to 4 ml of tincture 3 times each day for the duration of the condition.
To benefit the urinary tract long-term, eat parsley leaves regularly, advises Yarnell. Munch on the sprig decorating your restaurant meal; at home, add chopped leaves to omelets, salads, and hot dishes. One more benefit of eating it: Parkinson's breath-freshening advice will work as well for you as it did for the Queen of England, thanks to parsley's odor-zapping chlorophyll.Daily Living Comforts, Inc.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14857912503291934153noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3912337509550888010.post-68981002472443806652010-02-16T19:35:00.002-05:002010-02-16T19:58:36.752-05:00CAYENNE THE PAIN FIGHTERTRADITION SAYS: Columbus is credited with transporting cayenne peppers- also called chiles, after their Aztec name, chil - from the New World to the Old. A 2009 paper in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports that capsaicin-related compounds helped people lose abdominal fat. Cayenne also appears to control blood sugar. Barley contains beta-glucan, a type of soluble fiber that binds with cholesterol to whisk it from the body, explains David Grotto, RD, the author of 101 Optimal Life Foods. A cup and a half of cooked pearled barley contains 3 g of soluble fiber, the daily amount recommended by the FDA.
PINTO BEANS: Like barley, pinto beans contain cholesterol-fighting beta-glucan. In one study, participants with mild insulin resistance (a precursor to high cholesterol) who ate 1/2 cup of pinto beans daily dropped 19 points from their total count in 8 weeks, including a 13-point decrease in LDL.
GRAPES: Consuming just 1 1/4 cups of grapes can prevent the damaging effects of a high-fat meal that can slow circulation and increase risk of coronary heart disease, say researchers at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, OH. The nuts, researchers concluded, increased the amount of healthy monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) in the blood. One ounce is adequate for most people.
MINERAL WATER: The magnesium and calcium plentiful in most mineral waters (like San Pellegrino, which has 56 mg magnesium and 208 mg calcium) are both potential blood pressure reducers. In a Swedish study, 70 men and women ages 45 to 64 with borderline hypertension experienced a significant decrease in blood pressure after 4 weeks of drinking 1 liter of mineral (not seltzer) water daily.
AVOID THESE.
ENERGY DRINKS: The caffeine and guarana that are often added to energy drinks can make your blood pressure skyrocket, says John La Puma, MD, the author of Chef MD's Big Book of Culinary Medicine.Daily Living Comforts, Inc.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14857912503291934153noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3912337509550888010.post-71047190179615732352010-02-08T15:06:00.002-05:002010-02-08T15:18:33.109-05:00Clear Your LungsFILL UP ON THESE.
Pears: These fruits contain quercetin, a powerful flavonoid that may protect the lungs. A Dutch study of more than 13,000 people found that those who ate the most pears (as well as apples, which also contain quercetin) had the best lung function, while an Australian study discovered a strong association between high pear and apple consumption and lower risk of asthma.
Edamame: Lung cancer victims tend to ahve low levels of phytoestrogens, important plant compunds, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Women who ate the highest quantities of foods conainting phytoestrogens, such as edamame, tofu, and lentils, slashed their lung cancer risk by 34%.
Brown Rice: This grain is high in selenium, which may help keep lung-damaging free radicals from forming. A New Zealand study found that people who got the most selenium were nearly 2 times less likely to develop asthma as those who got the least. You'll meet the DV of 55 mcg with a few servings of selenium-rich foods, such as whole wheat bread, chicken, and eggs.
AVOID THESE.
Soft Drinks: If you have asthma, skip soft drinks, advises La Puma. Many contain food additives such as sodium benzoate, MSG, and sulfites, which can exacerbate symptoms.Daily Living Comforts, Inc.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14857912503291934153noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3912337509550888010.post-64648955579624353472010-01-19T15:37:00.003-05:002010-01-19T15:43:05.965-05:00Easier, More effective CPRGiving only chest compressions - without mouth-to-mouth produces a better outcome for people in cardiac arrest. Half of the volunteers had very little experience with the Internet and the other half was familiar.

After the experiment was performed, brain scans were taken. During a routine visit they may be told they have hypertension, diabetes or high cholesterol; that they obese; eat unhealthily and drink too much. As a result, many are started on prescription drugs.

Do we fully understand what is the difference between relative and absolute risk before started on a regime of prescriptions drugs? We rely on reasoning that prescriptions reduce the risk by 25-35% and all with apparent risks should be treated the same. Is reasoning brought on by comparisons made by the treatment in question with no treatment, placebo, or another pill? Did you know it is said that about 75 mildly hypertensive elderly people may have to be treated before one is treated, preventing a stroke. Often, in the 74 others, scant attention is paid to potential side effects derived from treatments. It is said the cardiovascular system becomes more rigid with advancing age, and reduction of mild hypertension can lead to vertigo. This side effect in elderly people adds a hazard of falling, hence the relative risk has now lead to an elderly who may not have ever been an absolute risk now being a patient due a fall. Blockers may lower blood pressure, they can also slow activity, mental and physical.

The actual evidence for the benefit of treating any risk factor in age groups over 70 needs much more consideration when applied to an individual. Prevention among young and middle aged adults should be encouraged and supported, but should treatment equally fit the elderly? It seems fewer elderly people are allowed to enjoy being healthy and become patients due to side effects of prescriptions prescribed in the possibility of overdiagnosis, overtreatment, and unnecessary anxiety.Daily Living Comforts, Inc.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14857912503291934153noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3912337509550888010.post-84599746674967244332009-10-28T10:45:00.003-04:002009-10-28T12:06:47.936-04:00There's not 100% proof, however...Most milk producers treat their dairy cattle with rBGH or rBST ( recombinant bovine growth hormone ) to improve their milk productions, however it also increases udder infections, and pus in the milk. It leads to higher levels of a hormone called insulin-like growth factor ( IGF-1 ) in the milk. High levels of IGF-1 may contribute to breast, prostate, and colon cancers. When the government approved rBGH, it was thought that IGF-1 from milk would be broken down in the human digestive tract. As it turns out, the casein in milk may protect most of it, according to independent studies. This is not 100% proof that this is increasing cancer in humans, but it is banned in most industrialized countries.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GpqwZDbMHU

www.dailylivingcomforts.comDaily Living Comforts, Inc.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14857912503291934153noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3912337509550888010.post-81972727572540840662009-10-23T12:08:00.003-04:002009-10-23T12:35:14.795-04:00A recent study from UCLA - pancreatic cancerMicrowave Popcorn

A senior scientist, Olga Naidenko, PHD for the Environmental Working Group claims a problem with a chemical, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA ), in the lining of the bag are part of a class of compounds that may be linked to infertility in humans, according to a recent study from UCLA. They will now go to the Attorney General's office for review before the final is published in the Pennsylvania bulletin.

Regulations are intended by the Department of Health to assure safe, adequate and efficient home care agencies and home care registries. The regulations will benefit all future recipients of services provided by home care agencies and home care registries. Based on partial data collected by the Department to date, this will include approximately 650 home care agencies and home care registries and approximately 800,000 consumers.

Thirty-five other states have licensure programs in place for home care services. Home care agencies and home care registries are not likely to avoid doing business in Pennsylvania because Pennsylvania is adopting a licensure program for home care services. While the cost of doing business in Pennsylvania may be a little higher than in a state that does not have a licensure program, the advantages of providing home care services in a sate with such a high elderly population remain.

The licensure program for home care agencies and registries will cost approximately $1,060,000 by the State Government for the first full year of the program.

There may be a cost to the public in the form of higher charges for care because the home agency or home care registry would need to recoup start-up and ongoing costs of compliance with licensure criteria.Daily Living Comforts, Inc.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14857912503291934153noreply@blogger.com0
